Zone 8 · Leafy Greens Growing Guide
Cold-hardy superfood that actually tastes better after frost. One of the most productive crops per square foot. Can harvest outer leaves all season.
In Zone 8, Kale should be planted outdoors Feb 15 – Oct 1, after the average last frost date of approximately Feb 15. Start seeds indoors around Jan 1 – Jan 15 for a head start.
Cool-season crop primarily. Summer is challenging. Focus on fall/winter/spring harvests.

Leafy crop that loves nitrogen. Feed monthly with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer. Reduce feeding in the final 4 weeks before harvest.
Sow every 4 weeks from spring through midsummer. Kale improves after frost — a late summer sowing gives your best autumn and winter harvests.
What you plant next to kale makes a real difference — some plants actively help, others compete or attract pests.
These guides get better when growers like you contribute. If something’s wrong or you’ve learned something worth sharing, we’d love to hear it.
