Zone 8 · Root Vegetables Growing Guide
One of the fastest root crops — baby turnips in 35 days. Both root and greens are edible. Cool-season crop that tolerates light frost.
In Zone 8, Turnip should be planted outdoors Feb 1 – Mar 15, Sep 15 – Nov 15, after the average last frost date of approximately Feb 15.
Fall and winter is primary season.

Light feeder. Work a balanced fertilizer into the bed before sowing. No additional feeding needed.
Sow every 3 weeks from early spring and again from late summer. Small turnips are best — don't let them get too large between successions.
What you plant next to turnip makes a real difference — some plants actively help, others compete or attract pests.
These guides get better when growers like you contribute. If something’s wrong or you’ve learned something worth sharing, we’d love to hear it.
