Zone 4 · Root Vegetables Growing Guide
Incredibly productive — a 10-foot row can yield 25 lbs of potatoes. Plant certified seed potatoes. Hilling soil around stems as they grow is the key technique.
In Zone 4, Potato should be planted outdoors Apr 25 – May 20, after the average last frost date of approximately May 1.
Plant early varieties mid-April to late May. Chit seed potatoes (sprout in light) for 2 weeks first.

Feed with balanced fertilizer at planting. Apply high-potassium feed when plants flower to improve tuber development.
What you plant next to potato makes a real difference — some plants actively help, others compete or attract pests.
These guides get better when growers like you contribute. If something’s wrong or you’ve learned something worth sharing, we’d love to hear it.
