Shiitake gets all nutrition from the log or sawdust block. Soak logs in cold water for 24 hours to trigger a fruiting flush. No fertilizer needed or recommended.

Succession Growing

Start new batch every 4 weeks

Inoculate multiple logs at different times for a spread of harvests. Logs fruit 2–3 times per year and last 3–5 years — a small batch of staggered logs keeps you in shiitake indefinitely.

Common questions

Log-inoculated shiitake takes 6–12 months to fully colonise before first fruiting. Sawdust blocks are much faster — expect first flush in 60–90 days.
Soak the log in cold water for 12–24 hours, then leave it somewhere cool and shaded. Pins should appear within 5–10 days. This works year-round on established logs.
A well-maintained hardwood log produces for 3–5 years. Oak gives the longest yields. Keep logs in dappled shade and never let them fully dry out.
