Zone 4 · Fruiting Veg Growing Guide
The most demanding crop in this guide — needs consistent moisture, steady cool temperatures, and a very long season. But homegrown celery has a depth of flavour you'll never find in a supermarket. Start early, be patient.
In Zone 4, Celery should be planted outdoors May 10 – May 25, after the average last frost date of approximately May 1. Start seeds indoors around Feb 25 – Mar 10 for a head start.
10 weeks indoors minimum. Keep soil consistently moist — celery wilts fast and recovers poorly. Golden Pascal or Tango are reliable varieties.

One of the heaviest feeders in the vegetable garden. Liquid feed every 2 weeks. Inconsistent feeding produces stringy, bitter stalks.
What you plant next to celery makes a real difference — some plants actively help, others compete or attract pests.
These guides get better when growers like you contribute. If something’s wrong or you’ve learned something worth sharing, we’d love to hear it.
