The king of winter squash. Long shelf life (up to 6 months), sweet nutty flavour, and one plant produces 3–5 large squash. Needs room to sprawl — give it space.
In Zone 6, Butternut Squash should be planted outdoors May 1 – Jun 1, after the average last frost date of approximately Apr 1. Start seeds indoors around Apr 1 – Apr 20 for a head start.
Excellent zone. Plenty of season for full maturation. Harvest when skin is hard and tan.

Long season crop. Feed at planting, again at flowering, then switch to potassium-rich feed once fruit is sizing up.
What you plant next to butternut squash makes a real difference — some plants actively help, others compete or attract pests.
These guides get better when growers like you contribute. If something’s wrong or you’ve learned something worth sharing, we’d love to hear it.
